Holidays in Innsbruck, Tyrol
Surrounded by an impressive backdrop of mountains, Innsbruck is the centre of attraction for many visitors.
The historical city centre is highly inviting just for a stroll through the winding lanes and for taking in refreshment in one of the many street cafés.
Innsbruck is surrounded by the best skiing areas in Austria and provides numerous leisure activities in winter. A romantic winter walk or a shopping stroll – on holiday in Innsbruck, this decision is somewhat superficial – for here, town and country, sporting pleasure and cultural enjoyment lie right next to each other.
Innsbruck was twice hosted the Winter Olympic Games (1964 and 1976) and is a highly developed cultural centre with an 800-year past. The city of art treasures, it is famous for its ‘Golden Roof’, the ‘Schwarzen Mander’, the Hofburg and Schloss Ambras. A stroll through town and conquering summits. Baroque opera and brass-band music. Tuxedo and lederhosen.
The Goldene Dachl, the golden roof, at the end of Maria-Theresia-Straße is one of the major landmarks of Innsbruck. This magnificent oriel covered with 2657 gold-plated copper tiles, the landmark of the city was commissioned under Kaiser Maximilian I by Niclas Türing d.Ä. and according to the inscription was completed in 1500. The frescoes stem from Maximilian’s court painter Jörg Kölderer.
The relieves on the oriel show portraits of Maximilian and his two wives, surrounded by Morisco dancers. Coats of arms, hidden references and symbols provide for a complex synthesis of arts that reflects Maximilian’s self-portrait.
The new Berg Isel ski jump is on the best way to becoming the new landmark of the city. Numerous museums and the Alpine zoon invite you to come and visit. You can get more information from the tourist information board in Innsbruck.
